Process...two women on the beach

This was my demo this morning.  I was showing that not always doing a finished drawing in the beginning can allow for the looseness of adding and carving the shape in order to create the image.  I feel sometimes that if I draw the figures completely first then I'm coloring in rather than making decisions about lost and found edges

Sicilian Boats

Morning demo...8 x 10 oil on board.  Talked about a few things...that the foreground and everything behind it can't compete...and that all those whit boats can't be the same.  I put the photo reference below so you can see the amount of simplification and editing.  A photo should inspire but not control you

Tuscan View

I did this painting, 10 x 10, on a linen canvas with no underpainting.  It is softer than usual and I like the look in person.  Not sure it photos all that successfully

Some Peacham paintings

Foggy Morning Peacham, 12 x 12, was my morning demo today.  Always trying to get away from too much green.  The other is an 8 x 10 of downtown Peacham.

Peacham Sky

Monday morning's demo...done from two different references.   The idea being not to be controlled by the reference but by your own vision.  8 x 10 oil on canvas

Wine Time

Wine Time is another struggle for me.  Not sure it's done and might do some tweaking.   Or might forget it.

video

I just found this video on line and also discovered that if you google me, there are others as well.  This does a pretty good job of showing my process...can't stand looking at myself but the painting shots aren't bad.  This was from a plein air through my gallery, Camden Falls Gallery, a couple of years ago.

Student 10 stroke work

Here are some examples of my students' work on the 10 strokes.  They were awesome!

10 stroke eggplant

Did some 10 stroke exercises with class today.  Along with practicing better brush strokes and really loading the brush, we also talked about turning form with color not value.

This was my only half way decent 10 stroke!  Some of my students blew me away though.

Corner of Maple Tree Lane and Peacham Danville Rd

I have painted this scene various times and never tire of the light and colors I see here.  When I leave Peacham, VT I get to this corner and always marvel.  12 x 12 oil on canvas

Utility Room

Utility Room is 16 x 20 oil on canvas.  Such a difficult painting.  Not sure it is totally done yet.  I really had to start making changes that were all about the painting and its unity and color and nothing about the reference.

Cincinnati Art Club Workshop

Had a fabulous time at my workshop at the Cincinnati Art Club.  Great students and even did some 10 stroke exercises.

Got to be the juror of awards for the Viewpoint national show as well.  Fabulous work and a very difficult job!
