Lake and rocks Maine

Did these little oils.  The rocks started plein air but in all honesty, I did have to make lots of changes inside.  Hard to see the colors in the full  sun...and I no longer bring an umbrella since the number of times it blew away got tiresome.  I am in awe of the many beautiful coastal paintings I see...this is once again out of my comfort zone.

Might still work some more on the lake and trees.  I'll repost it if I do.

Maine Bike

First morning on Swans Island.  Got up to go paint...felt a little lazy.  As I was heading out the door I saw my bike and the light and thought..try it.  It's out of my comfort zone but fun.  8 x 8 oil

AIS 19Th Annual

Very honored to be accepted into the American Impressionist Society's 19th Annual National Juried Show.  I am in the process of jurying another show and it's interesting receiving this news during this process.  My hands shook as I opened up the site to see if I was accepted.  I am very sensitive to the victories and disappointments of this process and though I must do the most honest job jurying that I can, I am sorry knowing some will be rejected.

A Plein Air Peacham and a workshop in Canaan, NH

Plein Air Peacham

Pastel Canaan Workshop
We had beautiful weather this week and got a chance to do a little plein air painting in Peacham overlooking on of the ubiquitous and amazing views.  This is a little 8 x 8.

Then the rains came and along with it a one day pastel workshop in Canaan, NH.  True to form, my plein air workshop became an indoor one and it was a great group!  Did this pastel demo and mostly we were hard working and cold!  54 degrees on one of the first days of summer.  Fun anyway

On a break

This 9 x 12 was started as a demo in my Monday oil class but finished in the studio.  I feel like these city scenes are getting too tight and am attempting to figure out how to change that

PSA Workshop

9th Avenue  9 x 12 pastel
Just back from teaching a 3 day "plein air" workshop with the Pastel Society of America.  It's in quotes because the first two days weather prevented us from heading out. Fun anyway and great group!
Madison Park...the only plein air I got to do  9 x 12

Pedestrians  9 x 12

The Met  9 x 12

This is the final painting of A Street in Utrecht and I am showing the stages it went through to get to the details

Evolution of Sitting Room

These are steps in creating the final painting.  You can see I start with a rough sketch and then fill in the shapes and color fields.  I got more detailed in class and after the demo is my final painting.  I'm actually not sure I don't like the color field one the best.

Cafe in Croatia

I've been wanting to do this image for a while since I love the window and doors but the chairs scared me.  Anyway, tried it today...12 x 12 oil on canvas

beach group

Struggled with this one in the studio.  16 x 20 oil on canvas.  Hard to make the people not compete with each other.  Putting it away for now

Prix de Pastel IAPS

I am truly amazed..truly...to find out that my pastel, Golden Light, was chosen Prix de Pastel at the 2018 International Association of Pastel Societies National juried show in Tacoma.  This is the top award given, and given the amazing work that was on display, I am humbled and yes, amazed.

Check out this fabulous show at http://www.iapspastel.org/exiaps_previous.php

Pastel demo for Monday class

My Monday morning oil class has some pastelists and they wanted a demo in pastel.  This is 9 x 12 on Art Spectrum Colorfix paper

Vermont Road

This is my 11 x 14 oil demo this morning.  I reinforced the idea that instead of copying the photo, look at the abstraction of light and dark values and colors and place them on the canvas and "allow" the image to emerge in this way.

Had a really fun workshop in North Port, Florida...oils and pastels.  Some wonderful artist/students and I had a chance to meet some FB friends...great work!  Here are my demos.
