Italian Stroll

One of my Italian street scenes from my workshop in Tuscany. Not sure about this one...might be a bit boring.

Last demo for November class

This was the last demonstration for my November/December class. The idea was to show how a very complicated image is simplified...especially playing down the buildings in order to highlight the biker.

Snowy Stream

This was my demo at the Community College of Vermont oil painting class. I wanted to show how many hues of white there are and how to make snow glisten using them.

Sunapee River demo

Near Sunapee harbor behind the boardwalk is a river and this scene is where my New London workshop painted the other day. The sun was in and then mostly out. I started the painting but finished it from my sunny photos in my Monday oil class.

Cat Walk

This was a struggle and I had to call it cat walk so everyone who thinks that little black shape is, perhaps, a turkey. But here it is and perhaps I will do it again one day...or figure out how to make the cat definitive.

Cafe in San Giminianoa

In the picturesque, and now very touristy, San Giminianoa, there are many cafes outside in the squares that are bordered by towers. No cars are allowed inside the village which contributes to its charm. I loved both the buildings and the umbrellas.

Class Demo Italy

Looking from the famous Ponte Vecchio, this had a lovely serenity. Simplification of the buildings into their shapes with lights and darks allows the bridge to shine.

Our Villa Demo 4

Our villa was gorgeous and this painting does not do it justice. I did this demo and though some of the color is fine, I wasn't that happy with the design. But, the point of the demo was to show how to start with big shadow shapes and then put in more definition but keep the values consistent.

3rd Italy Demo

On a beautiful morning, I wanted to paint the distant view towards San Giminianao. Some days it was visible and others not. I was a little unsure if I could manage it, but I felt ok with the result.

2nd Demo Italy

It was cold, extremely windy and the morning...time for a demo! In this one, I wanted to show the set up of three distances, the grapes up front, on to the near view and then the distant hills.

Camden Walkway

It has been a difficult time in the studio. I have been very lucky not to be affected physically by Hurricane Irene, but emotionally we are all here in Vermont affected. I have not felt like painting and forced myself to finish something. I have no idea if it works or how I feel about it. I think sometimes, you need a break and need to revitalize away from your art in order to return to it...I hope!

Shoreline

More Maine shoreline paintings. I was particularly attracted to the colors of the rocks

Tuesday, August 16, 2011

Bathers

One of the bigger paintings I've done, I saw these bathers at the Quarry and designed this painting with various scenes I saw.

Thursday, August 11, 2011

Seagulls

Lots of seagulls hang out at the quarry in Maine. This was a difficult painting. I had two heros for too long...the rocks and the seagulls. I hope I have resolved this.

Sea Rocks

Home from Maine now...but missing it. This is the shoreline pretty much everywhere. Painting rocks is always a challenge...to make them look like rocks but be interesting as shapes and colors as well.

Lone Biker Maine

A favorite activity here in Maine...biking. Beautiful houses along the roads and the sea on the other side.

yellow wharf in Maine

This wharf is a beautiful sight on the island. It was painted yellow apparently because that's the paint that was available. Lucky for the artist as it's a feast for the eyes and color palette.

Atop Jericho Hill plein air

Went out painting the other day and did this 9 x 12 at the top of Jericho Hill in Wilder, Vt.

Country Ride

Not at all sure about this one. I was drawn to designing it this way, don't mind the color but it feels perhaps too detailed for me.

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Pastel Demo

Did a pastel demo in class the other day. Wanted to show how to develop the relationship between foreground and background and how to make it dynamic but not conflicting.

Dad and son wading

Struggled with a bigger painting...total frustration...and then finished the day with this 6 x 6 for fun

Demo

This is a one hour demo I painted in the Monday class. Lovely model we had!

Storm Glow

Another larger painting to get myself out of my smaller painting comfort zone. Started very abstract but had a definite landscape in mind. Not sure if the colors work...

Trying larger and still loose

I am pretty comfortable with small canvases and staying loose. But getting larger has been a learning experience. This painting is 18 x 24 inches, huge for me, small for some of my hero painters. Still not sure how I feel about it.

demo...small canvas big still life

One of my students brought in amazing pottery she has and incredible flowers from her garden. I only had a 9 x 12 inch canvas, so the demo was about design, negative spaces, blocking in the values before putting on the pattern. They did beautifully.

lilacs demo

One of my wonderful students brought this pottery with her irsises. This is my demo...I'll probably do a couple of small changes still. All my students did a great job!

Entering White River Jct

I see changes happening in my work. Some I like, some confuse me. Not sure how I feel with this one. Sometimes I feel it's finished and what I "saw" and other times it seems so dark.

Colanders

My still life demo from the Monday morning painting class. Those in it will recognize that I took out the red pepper..upon recommendation...and it works better.

Hey Seagull

I used two images to put this painting together for the dynamic between the little girl and the seagull.
