paint sketches

Great time in figure group this morning...my favorite model. These are 5 minute sketches..oil on paper...except the sitting down was 25 minutes.  With that one, I didn't quite capture the gesture

  1. Aline, you are so funny! You do utterly brilliant 5 minute sketches, just amazing gestural lines. But if you get an extra 20 minutes, you risk using it to hide that original beauty! You have such an intuitive sense of how the body moves that you only need 5 or 10 minutes to render it. I especially love the first sketch where the model faces the light--that picture seems just as 'complete' as the 25 minute pose, plus you've captured a difficult pose beautifully. I can see why you like this model. Maybe you could do a few pictures of her in pastels to use as 'finished' pieces or to record more info for a finished piece in either oil or pastel. I'm a huge fan of the way you 'carve' the figure with pastels. You seem to be seeing the negative space in a powerful way when you do figures in pastel. Aline, I love the way you paint in both oil & pastel & I'm always inspired after visiting your blog. Someday I hope to join you if/when you take a group to France again! L&K, MaryB

  2. Crucial Update: Forget France--maybe I can get it together to go with you to Croatia in 2017! That area is even more amazing than France. For example, we wouldn't be far from Count Dracula's home turf! I must look into this pronto--I only have a bit less than 2 years to prepare mentally & spiritually. Plus pack! Gee, I hope I can bring my two Rottweilers. It would be a truly broadening experience for them. But it's OK if they can't come. There should be Dalmatians to play with around there. L&K, MaryB

    1. Mary you make ME laugh! I'd love to meet you and Croatia would be incredible. Also, because the amount is in Canadian dollars it's actually cheaper than it appears! I am going to have this model for my Landgrove, 'vt workshop and will do some pastels then for sure! Thanks again

  3. Hi, Aline, these are so beautiful! I love the immediacy of your brushstrokes. You captured the essence so well!

What kind of paper are you using? Is it on colored matboard or something similar?

  4. Hi Marlene,
Thank you! I am using paper called Artagain. It is toned and pretty smooth so the paint goes on fairly easily. I use it in these drawing sessions rather than canvas or boards since the poses are pretty short.
