Bouquet demo pastel

This was the demo from my pastel class on Wednesday.  Flowers are hard!  It's best not to try to draw them with much detail, but to create the shapes with the color and value and carving back with the background color.

  1. This is a beautiful bouquet, Aline. I've never had luck painting flowers but I would love to start experimenting ... I love the looseness in this piece and wonderful colors.....

  2. I agree with Hmuxo--this IS a beautiful bouquet! I love the way you've left it as a 'vignette.' It makes a classical subject seem very 'with it' & 'happening.' (I'm a beatnik so I know...) As for difficulty, I heard one artist who specialized in roses say that if one could paint a rose, one could easily paint human portraits. Frankly, your method of 'carving back' the shapes IS how you paint figures. Maybe there is a rose/human connection.
Anyway, I love the way you've done these & I hope you do more! L&K, MaryB

  3. Just saw these comments...thank you. Yeah, I think flowers are difficult. For me, I have to think in terms of shapes and not line to define them.
