I plan to post current paintings on my blog site. I'm not much of a writer but I do love to paint. I do oils and pastels and I teach workshops. I plan to sometimes post demos and talk about how to create a painting as well.

First plein air Swans Island
Well, it was sunny this morning...first day at Swans Island in Maine. Went out to paint early...which was fun, and all...but frankly, being buzzed by bees and horseflies takes a bit of the joy out of plein air painting

Hi, Aline! I love this painting. (There aren't even any smashed bugs in your strokes, either.) The water is luminous with its many different hues & the color harmony is wonderful. I study your 'values' to learn how to group mine better as I set up my compositions. And I'm finally doing 'plein air' work, too! It feels weird to paint outside now but I want to get used to it. This blog works really well for viewing your work. The tiny version of a piece is like seeing it 'from afar'--no details can be seen, just the overall effect. Once you enlarge it, all the strokes are evident & one can see the 'magic.' A mass of paint dabs up close resolves into a gorgeous landscape from a few feet away! I'm trying hard to leave my strokes unblended--my artwork may look 'ugly' (to me) up close but that's OK. The work is meant to be viewed from a distance. I'm having a big epiphany--finally--about all of this & it was sparked by an oil painter advising students not to 'blend.' 'Til now, I'd associated blending only with pastels but this is a far bigger concept & one I need to absorb. Yay! L&K, MaryB
Thanks Mary! I agree about not blending...or at least, leaving some things to the imagination, some strokes to be vivid and maybe a touch of blending. I forgot my acrylic to tone my canvas so it's been interesting working on a white canvas...giving it a chance. Good luck!
