My current class is quite advanced, so my demo Monday morning was on 8 x 8 inch canvas of this image. I was not sure I'd pull it off....but I wanted to make it about design (the original photo has much more in it) and working with mass and shape...especially simplifying the more complicated images.

During my recent pastel workshop, I introduced the idea of doing an object in ten strokes. In oils, you can pre mix the color, but in pastels it's an added challenge. This apple was done in ten strokes which encouraged the students to be very deliberate with their color choices and strokes. The onions were another demo using loose strokes and dynamic color.

It has been a difficult time in the studio. I have been very lucky not to be affected physically by Hurricane Irene, but emotionally we are all here in Vermont affected. I have not felt like painting and forced myself to finish something. I have no idea if it works or how I feel about it. I think sometimes, you need a break and need to revitalize away from your art in order to return to it...I hope!

This wharf is a beautiful sight on the island. It was painted yellow apparently because that's the paint that was available. Lucky for the artist as it's a feast for the eyes and color palette.

One of my students brought in amazing pottery she has and incredible flowers from her garden. I only had a 9 x 12 inch canvas, so the demo was about design, negative spaces, blocking in the values before putting on the pattern. They did beautifully.

This demonstration was not just about painting glass or flowers, but a consideration of design. By using such a long and narrow canvas, the challenge was to crop the flowers in the vase to create interesting negative shapes.

This is a demonstration in my Pastel class at the Community College of Vermont. All painting is really abstract painting because it is all about shapes. With that in mind, I showed them how to create a copper teapot by making sure the exterior shape was a teapot, but within that, just to paint shapes and colors without thinking copper.

Whew. This was difficult and I'm not totally sure it's done. I added a detail of a part of the painting that I felt worked. The hardest part is not having the foreground compete with the building. So much detail there and I reworked the pond over and over. Still not sure.

This was the demo in my Community College of Vermont pastel class. Clearly I loved the cherries and the green apple is in danger of being illiminated. Not sure yet whether it reads well or if it even should. Don't want to take away interest from the cherries.
